Bonnie Raitt was “surprised” and “completely humbled” to receive the Grammy Award for song of the year on Sunday.

When she won the award for her song “Just Like That,” the legendary singer appeared stunned and received a standing ovation from the audience at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena. During her acceptance speech, she paid tribute to renowned folk musician John Prine, who died of COVID-19 complications in April 2020.

In his predictions for the 2023 Grammys, Times pop music critic Mikael Wood called 73-year-old Raitt “stiff competition” in the song of the year category with “a moving and complex tale of a mother’s encounter with the recipient of her late son’s inheritance.””heart transplant.”

Along with “Just Like That,” “abcdefu” (Gayle), “About Damn Time” (Lizzo), “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)” (Taylor Swift), “As It Was” (Harry Styles), “Bad Habit” (Steve Lacy), “Break My Soul” (BeyoncĂ©), “Easy on Me” (Adele), “God Did” (DJ Khaled), and ” (Kendrick Lamar).

Her entire acceptance speech is included below.

Oh, my goodness. Oh, I’m taken aback. I’m at a loss for words. This is a surreal moment. Thank you for honouring me, and thank you to everyone at the academy who supports me and values the art of songwriting as much as I do. I was so inspired for this song by the incredible story of someone who donates their beloved’s organs to help another person live, and the story was so simple and so beautiful for these times.

People have responded to the song in part because because of how much I and we all love John Prine, and that was the inspiration for the music and telling a story from the inside… I don’t write many songs, but I’m honoured that you appreciate this one and what it means to me and the other songwriters.

I wouldn’t be up here tonight if it weren’t for the great, soul-searching, hard-working people who put these songs and ideas to music. So I’d like to thank my team for assisting me in releasing this record. Thank you very much. I’m completely humbled. It means a lot to me. Thank you very much.
